The Collected Editions§

Graham Greene wrote and published over two dozen novels. I’ve read almost all of them, the main exception being his first two. Those two have been out-of-print for decades and he refused to allow them to be republished. His other novels have been reprinted many times, by several publishing houses, in hard-bound and paperback formats.

My copies of the novels are paperback and were published by Vintage books and Penguin Classics. Since I’ve had some of them for about twenty years now, and have reread and searched through them several times, the so-called perfect bindings are coming apart. Therefore, I’d like to replace them with better copies. However, there aren’t any

Starting in 1970, the publishing company, William Heinemann, Ltd. republished almost all of Graham Greene’s novels — in addition to some short stories — a couple each year until 1982, for a total of twenty-two books. These were all with hard covers and fine paper and printing. As they no longer print them, obtaining copies is costly and a challenge.

These editions are not in order by date published, although they are numbered. Each book in the series was sub-titled, The Collected Edition — hence the heading, C.E. for its publication year. The Bodley Head Ltd. was another imprint of Heinemann. Some editions of this series may be published as Heinemann or Bodley Head. Incidentally, the last column states whether I own a copy or from where I may have ordered a copy.

Remaining Other Editions§

The twenty-two books published in the series above do not include all of Graham Greenes novels. Perhaps Heinemann intended to publish them all, but stopped as their was not enough sales to justify the less popular ones that remained. However, Bodley Head did publish them in the same size and similar binding. Below is a list of them:

As you can see, I’m trying to get copies of all of these: I’ve already ordered them through a few used booksellers on-line.
